Get Involved. Be Informed. Make A Difference.

Walker School and the PTO offer many opportunities for you to get involved. Sometimes in little ways, sometimes in bigger or more involved ways. Whatever your schedule allows, your help is always valued, appreciated and needed.
Contact the Walker PTO or Jan Martin (jmartin@d181.org) at school for more details.

PTO Committees

2021-2022 Volunteer Sign Up
Volunteer Time Commitments
Note: The PTO is currently working with Mr. C and the Walker staff to understand how we can best run these committees during these unprecedented times. We will continue to share updates with you regarding these committees as it becomes available. In the meantime, please reach out to Megan Mannor or Corri Natarelli with any questions!

One Hour Club
: Help when you can!  Donate an hour here and there throughout the year by volunteering with various school/PTO-sponsored events. Opportunities could be during the day or outside of school hours.  Get invited to help on a variety of committees.

WalkerFest: Plan, organize and coordinate our main fundraising and social event scheduled for October 4, 2019.  Also looking for day of volunteers!

Art Awareness:  Provide art enrichment to students through individual classroom visits in your child's grade. Presentations are approximately 20-30 minutes long and occur one-two times per year. Training and materials provided.

Bike Safety:  Organize the bike safety check (Bike Rodeo) prior to the start of school for all 3rd graders or new 4th and 5th graders wishing to ride their bikes to school.

Book Fair:  Work with the MRC Director to coordinate volunteers for the Fall/Spring book fair(s).

Bricks:  Promote and coordinate the sale and installation of commemorative bricks.

Bulletin Board Committee:  Pick a month to decorate the bulletin board outside the school.

Directory:  Manage the Walker directory with family contact information. Computer skills are a plus for this job. Work begins during the summer and is typically completed in September.

Field Day:  Help the Physical Education teachers organize parent volunteers for Field Day.

Going Green:  Work with the student ECO club, staff and parents to promote recycling and other “green” initiatives and reinforce lessons on how to protect our local and global environment. Plant flowers and help maintain beautiful campus gardens.  Plan activities around Earth Day in April.

Holiday Bazaar:  Plan and organize a December holiday bazaar (shopping event for students).

Library Volunteers:  Volunteer in the library by checking out books for students, shelving books and helping with special projects. You can even schedule your shift to be at the same time as your child's weekly class visit to the library!

Passive Fundraising:  Work closely with the PTO Executive Board to coordinate and identify fundraising initiatives by partnering with retailers, area restaurants (monthly “Dinner Bell”) and Internet businesses (Amazon Smile) to receive a percentage of sales.

Plant Sale:  Plan the plant sale fundraiser in the spring.

Room Parent & Parent Social Events:  Volunteers work with classroom teachers to plan and assist with classroom parties and special events. There will also be a grade-level treasurer for each grade. Fifth grade room parents also work with teachers to coordinate 5th grade end of year celebration events, coordinate box-top collection and the class gift. Room parents will also coordinate grade level parents night out events.

Wednesday Recess Running Club:  Parent-lead activity that offers 1st-5th graders the opportunity to exercise during recess.  Come volunteer for just an hour to help track students laps and hand out rewards.

School Supplies: Coordinate school supply ordering in the spring as well as distribution in August. Manage t-shirt inventory and distribution needed throughout the year.

Science Club:  Help solidify STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) concepts to our students by providing in-class/after-school activities/classes.  Design and coordinate a Science Fair to showcase students’ science projects.

Spelling Bee:  Organize and orchestrate a Spelling Bee for grades K-5 per Scripps Guidelines.

Spirit Gear: Coordinate the design, ordering, sale and distribution of Walker School clothing and accessories in the Fall.

Spirit/Hot Lunch:  Volunteer during the school lunch hour to pass out hot lunch in the cafeteria. Each month will have a unique sign-up so help when you can, you don’t have to commit to every single month!

Staff Appreciation:  Help plan 2-3 Annual Luncheons and acts of kindness throughout the year to show our teachers, faculty and staff how much they are appreciated.  Plan a meal for roughly 45 people, prepare, buy or coordinate the food from our volunteers.

Welcome Committee ("Buddy Family"):  Introduce and assist new families by becoming an assigned "buddy" family. Buddy families will become a resource for the new family about all Walker-related items.

Yearbook:  Help take/gather photos from parents and teachers throughout the year to compile into the school yearbook, which is printed at the end of the school year.
