ALL ABOUT WALKER

WHO WE ARE
Walker School is an elementary education school located in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and is part of District 181. Walker is one of the smallest schools within the district consisting of approximately 270 students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. There are seven elementary schools and two middle schools within our district.

Students at Walker School would attend Clarendon Hills Middle School (Grades 6 through 8) before moving on to Hinsdale Central High School (District 86).

OUR TOWN
Clarendon Hills is the ideal location for the family looking for a "small town" neighborhood. The city of Chicago is not too far away either. Our town is along the BNSF Railway (Metra) line and there are multiple options for driving to the city (I-290, I-55, I-294 to I-90/94). And we are conveniently located about 20-30 minutes from both Chicago airports (O'Hare and Midway).

Our town has a population of about 8,800 people with lots of families with children. This quaint village has a handful of boutique shops, a few wonderful restaurants, a hardware store, coffee shop, pizza parlour, various salons, and doctors offices. And we are not too far from a couple different shopping centers (Oakbrook Mall, Yorktown Mall, Whole Foods, Costco, Target, etc.).

During the summer on Wednesday evenings, the downtown area hosts "Dancin' In The Streets". There is a live band, food vendors, face painting, etc.

Each year on Fathers Day weekend in June, our town has "Daisy Days". Carnival rides, food vendors, face painters, animal shows, talent shows, live bands, etc., are set up in town for all to enjoy on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, people from all over gather for a 5K (with a Fun Run for kids).

And in early December, the town offers horse and carriage rides, tree lighting, ice sculpting, shopping, food vendors, etc. The perfect night to kick off the holiday season.

Every Thursday from early Summer to early Fall, a Farmers Market stops in town to offer freshly grown vegetables, homemade breads and pastries, and some fresh herbs and floral arrangements.

WALKER SCHOOL HISTORY

In 1870, a combined church/school was built on the site that is now Walker School, but it was destroyed by fire in 1887. A new frame building was built; that structure was torn down around 1938.

In 1925, at a cost of $17,500, the first of many sections of a new building was built. It contained two rooms and a basement with a heating plant and washrooms. In 1928, two rooms were added to the main floor and a gymnasium/auditorium for a total cost of $29,500. A north wing, containing two rooms and an office was added in

1938, which is when the frame structure mentioned previously was torn down. In 1953, four classrooms were built and in 1956 three more rooms were added. A gym, Learning Center and office were constructed around 1968.

Walker School was known as Clarendon Hills School District #56 until it was annexed to Hinsdale Elementary School District 181 in 1947.

In 2004, the structure was demolished to make way for the current building. The current 46,000 square foot building is housed on eight acres of land and opened in December 2005.
