It's Earth Week 2017 — April 16th through April 22nd!

Earth Week is here (April 16-22, 2017) and we have some exciting activities planned at Walker School. Please get involved and encourage your child to participate and learn how they can do their part.

Below are some activities to expect this week...

Replanting the Garden Wall (Tuesday 4/18 & Friday 4/21)
  • Each class will be assigned a time on Tuesday (4/18) or Friday (4/21) to participate in this hands-on activity.
  • We need donations of various plants, small herbs, tomatoes, pansies, or seeds of pumpkins, sunflowers and other types of vegetables.  Bags of potting soil would also be appreciated.
  • If you are interested in donating, please drop off your items on Lisa Deering’s front porch at 369 Ruby St. by this Saturday, April 15th.

Walker Environmental Checklist Challenge (all week)
  • Please encourage your child to participate in this challenge to be more “green” in their daily activities and the way they think about preserving our Earth.
  • Participate in as many activities on this list as you can. Then turn in your sheet (that came home in Friday Folders) to school on Monday, April 24th. You don't have to do all of them but do as many as you can:
    • Turn off the water when you brush your teeth
    • Take five minute (or less) showers
    • Use a reusable water bottle (no disposables)
    • Walk or ride your bike to school at least 2 days this week
    • Carpool to an activity
    • Use a reusable tote bag when shopping
    • Don't use straws or plastic utensils for the week
    • Pick up trash at your local park or neighborhood
    • Try turning down the temperature in your house by one degree (If you're cold, put on a sweater instead)
    • Turn off the lights when you leave the room
  • There will be prizes for each participant who completes the checklist.

Earth Week Question of the Day (all week)
  • Similar to Science Week, each morning there will be a question posed during morning announcements.
  • The students may submit answers and a winner will be drawn and announced at the end
    of the day.

Earth Day-Themed with Buddies (Friday, 4/21)

Walker Recycling Station (Saturday, April 22, 1-3pm)
  • It’s the perfect day for spring cleaning! If you have items you would like to recycle/repurpose, please bring them to the Walker School parking lot on Saturday, April 22 from 1-3pm.
  • We will get the items to the proper recycling facility for you.
  • Items we are accepting:
    • Books
    • Crayons, markers, pens, glue sticks and other school supplies
    • Small electronics
    • Florescent and CFL light bulbs (unbroken only)
    • Batteries
